Half-Adder: Truth Table and Logic Circuit (XOR/AND)
A keyword half-adder adds two single-bit inputs and and produces two outputs: keyword Sum and keyword Carry . In the simplest gate-level design, Sum is implemented with keyword XOR and Carry with keyword AND:
The half-adder is a combinational circuit (no memory): for every input pair , the outputs are determined immediately by the Boolean expressions above.

Truth table for the half-adder
Enumerate all input combinations for , then compute outputs using and .

This corresponds to the binary addition interpretation: when (i.e., ), the sum bit is and the carry bit is .

Draw the truth table and logic circuit of a half-adder
- 1Step 1
Use two inputs and two outputs: Sum and Carry .
- 2Step 2
Use and .
- 3Step 3
Evaluate to get and .
- 4Step 4
Connect both and to one XOR gate for , and both and to one AND gate for .
- 5Step 5
Label the XOR output as and the AND output as .
What the gates are doing (logic interpretation)
- keyword XOR outputs exactly when and differ, matching the half-adder sum bit.
- keyword AND outputs only when and , matching the half-adder carry bit.
- Therefore, in the specific truth-table row , XOR gives while AND gives , producing .
